  36. Too true, ST World is a great mag, full of in-depth reviews of hardware
  37. and software (recently it has shown a lot of interest in American
  38. proggies from the likes of Codehead). It's got some programming stuff,
  39. PD bit, comms area, a page on emulation stuff, oooh and lot's of other
  40. juicy info.

  42. I don't entirely agree with the comments on how badly the ST market over
  43. here is. A lot of the general *down* feeling has been generated by these
  44. mags (ST World excluded), although I must admit the Atari UK deserved to
  45. do badly this Christmas. I saw one telly advert about the Atari 800 games
  46. console! None at all about the ST, while I saw the Amiga ad at least
  47. twenty times....which would you buy?

  49. It's about time someone at Atari UK got their finger out. All they've
  50. done since Christmas is accuse Commodore UK of lying about sales figures
  51. in a pathetic attempt to cover up their own abysmal results.

  70. I have played it a lot... but I haev not solved it as some have.
  71. I have mapped most sections... and it was not difficult at all.
  72. Also, there are some decent maps of levels 1-10 (0-9?).
  73. I have not had a chance to get them yet... besides, the maze here does
  74. not seem as large as DM I [to me...].  I manage mostly by just
  75. remembering where to go.

  83. My problem is that I can not get the green gem without being burnt
  84. to a crisp.  I believe iron keys at the supplies for the quick can be
  85. used to turn off most of the fireball/lightning etc guns.  My problem
  86. is that I don't play the game too often and I haven't been able to get
  87. back to the green gem in a while since I have used a few iron keys.

  89. Also, if you can get on any of the ST BBSes taht are networked together...
  90. a lot of them have a CSB message base.  That is really helpful.

  108. At work, I am pulling out 100 megabyte hard drives from IBM rt's to replace
  109. them with 310 megabyte units.  This means that we have quite a few 100 meg.
  110. units sitting around that may be declared surplus.  The drive in question is
  111. a standard IBM-supplied RT drive - model 0699.  I am told that it may be
  112. an ESDI device.  My local Atari dealer tells me that I should be able to
  113. hook up a controller/interface from Berkerley Microsystems.  He tells me
  114. that the FaST unit from ICD is out of the question.  Does anyone else have
  115. experience with this, or have any bright ideas.  I surely would love
  116. to have a free, 20 microsecond 100 meg. hard drive to play with!

  233. Got problems with my hard disk. It is a Seagate 296N (SCSI), with ICD
  234. controller and software ICDBOOT ver. 3.41. Well - before I sometimes got
  235. a <Sense: $FF> and then it was shake, rattle, roll - suppose it recalibrated.
  236. But now I don't anymore, instead I get a <Sense: $17> quite often and trouble
  237. to read the stuff. What to do??? Scream?
  238. Then some positive info: concerning OVERSCAN it is up in ver. 2.1 now,
  239. improving all the time. I could run TurboC and Calamus without trouble in it.
  240. It also comes with nice "photos" in STAD format how to make the hardware
  241. fixes.
  242. Also - heard about the new shareware GEMINI-shell? It is up on version 1.1,
  243. some similarities with Neodesk, but quite a bit of differences too. It is
  244. GDOS-based. A couple of fonts to select among, also it is quite interesting
  245. because - well, you have seen these COMMAND shells, right? Well, it got one,
  246. which runs in a GEM window among the icons - neat!
  247. Both of these I loaded down from the German BBS Maus Munster a night or two
  248. ago, tel. # 0251-80386. The GEMINI shell you can also get from this guy:
  249. Gereon Steffens, Elsterweg 8, D-5000 KOLN 90, Germany. They write (in the
  250. January issue of ST Computer, the shell is also described in the Feb. issue
  251. of ST Magazine) that he will send it if you sent him a diskette and a stamped
  252. envelope. I suggest you can be more generous and include a $10 bill or more,
  253. because it really is a neat thing!
  254. BTW - the little Atari shop in our university town has sold at least a dozen
  255. STEs since they started to arrive in mid-December. What are you complaining
  256. about???

  276. beast in a new box, get one of those cute curly cables for the keyboard,

  321. I find shareware to be an interesting idea. It would seem a good way to
  322. at least get some kind of response from those who use your programs.
  323. However, I have never myself paid a shareware fee, although I have many
  324. shareware programs. The reason for this is that I have yet to find one I
  325. use even on an occasional basis. I keep them about so that I can get
  326. them to other ST people who might find them useful (a couple of the
  327. people I have given the shareware stuff to have sent in money). I do
  328. find it amusing that some authors seem petulant that not many people pay
  329. their fee. I don't think that they can *expect* people to pay. As for
  330. me, if the product is worth the money, it doesn't matter how it is
  331. distributed.

  347. Well, after getting my first programming degree, I looked all over for
  348. jobs (knowing I would still be attending school, I just wanted to see
  349. what was out there). It's basically a business programming degree, but I
  350. looked in newspapers from other cities, trade journals, scientific trade
  351. jounals, IEEE mags, and anything else I could find. I came to the
  352. conclusion that there were far more jobs requiring COBOL than any other
  353. language, and that those jobs were spread out so much that I could have
  354. gotten a job anywhere in the country I chose. A friend of mine working
  355. in California looked for me also, and seemed surprised that 'business'
  356. programming and 'real' programming were totally separate departments in
  357. most businesses, meaning that if you sent them a resume you had better
  358. be more specific than saying you were a programmer. I found this
  359. amusing, especially since at his company all the programmers (of every
  360. stripe) got together anyway, despite what the company thought.

  388. ]It is possible to connect a 1084 to a 1040. The only thing you need is a
  389. ]cable with a Scart connector for the 1084 and a monitor plug for the ST.

  391. An important note:
  392. A friend of mine has an Amiga-monitor for his ST (using a scart
  393. cable) and therefore I bought such a cable, too, when I got my colour
  394. monitor. But when buying the Comodore-monitor, I was told by the dealer
  395. that newer ones don't have the Scart-connector anymore !!!

  399. I got the right cable by Voelkner Elektronik, but it had swapped red and
  400. blue first... This might be due to the differences between STM and other
  401. STs.

  403. Despite this little problem an me running a hole afternoon between
  404. several stores, my monitor works really good. And it was about $100 cheaper
  405. than the SCM 1224 from Atari !
